Satellites Yar Oi Digital Cover

About This Release

Self-described as a “musical laboratory” lost somewhere between the mysterious alleys of 70’s Istanbul and the scorching sun and crystal blue sea of Jaffa-Tel Aviv, The Şatellites release their latest single Yar Oi and continue recontextualizing their adoration for Turkish music and the greats that paved the way before them.

Taken from their self-titled debut album “Şatellites”, set to be released on Batov Records on April 1st, 2022, Israeli “psych a la Turk band” illuminate the subtle melodies and vivid arrangements of female-led Turkish music.

Yar Oi is inspired by Turkish singer Ferda Gül’s “Yar Oy” released in the ’80s with the aim of shining a light onto a track that at one time got little to no recognition outside of Turkey. In a similar form to its predecessor, Yar Oi is animated and lively, ebbs and flows between the traditional sounds of the stringed Turkish Saz and middle eastern percussions yet with a modular and digital synthesized feel. Set to emulate the sound of the Zurna, a sharp, strident sounding flute, the synths take center stage throughout the track and play a call and response game with the other instruments all the while sitting comfortably under singer Yuli Shafiri’s alluring vocals (Yuli is also known as Cloud of I).

The Şatellites possess an innate ability to merge musical modernism, with traditional instrumentation and technique, to create unique musical combinations while capturing the rich and diverse music and culture that has, and continues to arise in and out of Turkey.
