Batov Records are delighted to present Chavo’s Album Launch Party at Passing Clouds with support by Gypsy Hill and The Din also on the decks we got Sacha Dieu, DJ Kobayashi and RUMPSTEPPERS, a night you just CAN’T miss!!
After 5 long years Chavo are back with a new album.
“Don’t Wake The Dead” is their most considered work to date. Still with the raw spontaneity of “Boundary Lane” but infused with electricity, beats and lush orchestration.
With flashes of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and Professor Longhair, it’s roots are clearly western. Touches of revenge film, 70’s funk, dancehall and British eccentricity. But it’s evident that their influences still hark to the shifting sands of the East.
Following up their “Greek Disco” – EP, thats everything you’ve been waiting for!

LIVE:

***GYPSY HILL***

Gypsy Hil play an intoxicating mix of Balkan brass, Mediterranean surf rock, ska & swing. Featuring guitars, horns, tuba, a scratch DJ and a mix of live and electronic beats, Gypsy Hill effortlessly mix the traditional with a uniquely modern sound.

Producers DJ Kobayashi and Herbert Newbert have taken the project from studio to stage, gradually growing the band and honing their high-energy live hows. Their burgeoning CV includes remixes for the likes of Balkan Beat Box and Al Jawala and a special feature on Ninja Tune’s acclaimed ‘Ninja Jamm’ app. On the latter appearing alongside electronic music royalty such as Coldcut, Mr Scruff, Bonobo and many more of the Ninja Tunes roster.

***Chavo***

Chavo is a London based band, initially formed as a Balkan recital outfit playing acoustic music to seated audiences. Very quickly the audiences began to stand up and the show times moved from 3pm to 3am. Sweating it out on the oom-pah music circuit became the norm, and after many years Chavo felt a desire for change. They waved goodbye to the traditional material (often sung in Roma or Serbian) and crafted an album of original songs in their home tongue – English. A change in line up and instrumentation also followed as they caught up with the technology of the 1970’s. What appears to have distilled from this epic journey is both imaginative and intriguing. A percussion heavy, mandolin infused, vintage keys indie band with seductive female bv’s, pounding bass lines, 4-floor dance rhythms and harmonic discord – a firm footing in the west with a nod to the east.

***The Din***

The Din- Four chaps, four instruments, three voices and a confluence of styles ranging from gypsy jazz to British indie, alternative folk to flamenco et cetera, The Din are surely hard to pigeon-hole. It’s essentially acoustic music, but don’t expect sultry ballads… more relentless, upbeat mash-up.
Originating from Newcastle-upon-Tyne they now reside in London, where the notoriety of the band’s high-octane live shows has led them to perform regularly across Europe and at many of the UK’s top venues and festivals, including Glastonbury and Isle of Wight as well as support slots with Babyshambles, Carl Barat, Adam Green and Frank Turner.
