Sefi Zisling – “Expanse” is another great pick by DJ Kobayashi
Israeli world-class jazz and funk trumpeter Sefi Zisling is a big inspiration here at Batov Records and his records are – in our opinion – a must-have in every respectable jazz and Afrobeat collection.
Inspired by childhood heroes John Coltrane, Grant Green, and Fred Wesley, ‘Expanse’ combines contemporary jazz, funk, afro-jazz, and spiritual jazz in a familiar, yet completely new feeling.
For this record, Zisling brought together all his closest associates: Idan Kupferberg (percussion), Uzi Ramirez (guitar), Yair Slutzki(trombone), including live band members: Omri Shani (bass), Tom Bollig (drums), Noam Havkin (drums), to create that comfortable dialogue between instruments, that makes ‘Expanse’ that much more special.
From the bright and round notes of the first track ‘Hight Ride’ to the slow and moody syncopations of ‘Changing Colours’, Zisling fuses traditional and contemporary jazz elements and a lot of improvisation to bring along this entrancing masterpiece filled with wonderful textures and Afrobeat highlights like ‘Happy Solar Return’ ft. Kutiman, my favorite track and the one that, in my opinion, represents the record best.
